Place & story

The school amalgamation

Corranny Primary School at Knockmacrooney joined with Cornagague Primary School, Magheraveely, in the formation of St Macartan’s school. In February 2012, Education Minister John O’Dowd told the Northern Ireland Assembly that construction on their shared replacement site had begun on 17 January 2011. The old Corranny building was vacated in 2012, according to the community’s subsequent feasibility study. [2] [3]

A community proposal

In December 2018, Aghadrumsee Community Group commissioned an examination of the old school’s potential as a community hub. The study recorded a main building of about 210 square metres within grounds of approximately 1.27 acres, most of them grass. The school stood on land held by trustees appointed by Clones parish. Reuse was still a proposal in that report, with grant-recovery obligations among the matters requiring resolution. [3]
