Place & story
The chapel-ground school
Barbara Graham and Lynne McKerr’s Killesher schools study identifies an early school in Saint Patrick’s chapel grounds on Tiravalley Road. Their comparison of historic maps and valuation records suggests that it had ceased operating by the mid-nineteenth century. They found no surviving trace in the chapel grounds. The study reports that school fees and the Commissioners of School Lands supported its teaching. [2]
A new school in 1957
A new school opened in Derrylester in 1957. The study connects this opening with the closure of nearby Drumcard’s Crossroads school. That older school stood at the junction of the Old Coach Road and Tiravalley Road; part of its walls was later incorporated into a house. [2]
