Troops crossing Lower Lough Erne
An account preserved by the Bureau of Military History places Letter within the fighting around Pettigo inJune 1922. Its IRA witnesses recalled British troops being carried by commandeered boats to Boa Island and then across to Letter. Another force approached from Kesh towards Lowery, intending to join them. The account describes IRA positions at the Waterfoot resisting that junction. It records how the lake and its narrow land connections shaped the approaches to Pettigo. [3]
