Place & story
The old national school
Ballinafad’s former national school dates from 1830, according to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. Its entrance projection was added in 1925, giving the older school an altered plan during the early Free State years. The inventory records the building’s later conversion to a house while noting the survival of timber sash windows and doors. It is a substantial reminder of nineteenth-century rural schooling in this part of Connemara. [2]
Railway work and rural households
Roger Harrison’s account of the 1911 census records sixty-six people in Ballinafad and identifies the national school among seventeen recorded houses. The Davit household illustrates the range of local work: John was a postman, his sons Patrick and James worked on the railway, and Peter was a railway porter. The townland’s outbuildings included a forge, workshop and electric power house alongside stables and cow houses. These records place transport and craft work beside farming in the everyday economy. [3]
Arthur Willcox’s Edwardian house
Lisnabrucka was built in 1910 for the American Arthur V. Willcox. Its mansard roof and dormer windows crown a house raised above a larger basement, whose roof forms a terrace or walkway. The NIAH records an entrance with classical columns and an open pediment, as well as an accompanying gate lodge and gardens. This elaborate house provides a marked architectural contrast with the school and the smaller dwellings documented in the census. [4]
