Nimmo’s working quay
Barna Quay extends into Galway Bay in a U-shaped arrangement of limestone walls, walkways and steps. The national architectural inventory dates it to about 1820 and attributes its design to Alexander Nimmo. An outer protective facing was added around 1900. Its combination of carefully squared stone and rougher rubble construction records the practical work of building and maintaining a harbour that supported fishing and trade west of Galway city.[2]
A proposed transatlantic harbour
In 1911, advocates of a new transatlantic port looked to Barna as a location for deep-water shipping. Galway County Council’s surviving committee file includes a letter promoting forty-five feet of water beside a proposed pier and an unobstructed route to the Atlantic. Supporters argued that direct connections to Canada, Newfoundland and America would reduce dependence on English ports. The archive preserves correspondence, speeches and press cuttings from this proposed expansion of Galway Bay’s maritime role.[3]
From Saint James’s to a modern church
Saint James’s church on the main Barna road first held Mass on 5 January 1840. The Lynch family of Barna House financed the T-shaped building and also supported a boys’ school across the road. Its successor, dedicated to Mary, Immaculate Queen, opened on 6 March 1977. Designed by Peter Murphy of Simon J Kelly and Partners, the new church incorporated objects from earlier places of worship, carrying elements of the parish’s history into a different building.[4]
