People & connections

The Henry estate

Mitchell Henry used an inheritance from his Manchester merchant father to acquire the Kylemore estate and develop a family home. Margaret Henry laid the castle’s foundation stone on 4 September 1867. Henry combined agricultural improvements with a political career as a Galway MP and supporter of Home Rule. The University of Galway’s estate research records that his county holdings exceeded 9,000 acres in the 1870s. [2] [3]

A church beside the lake

The estate’s Gothic Revival church was built in 1877–81, originally for Church of Ireland worship. The national architectural survey records a nave, chancel and southern transept, with a crenellated bell tower above a vestry. Its copper roofs, carved limestone details and angel figures give the small building considerable architectural richness. The church occupies a separate site along the lakeshore from the main castle. [4]

Refuge, education and a new home

Benedictine nuns arrived at Kylemore on 4 December 1920 after their community had fled Ypres during the First World War and spent time in England and Wexford. They opened a girls’ boarding and day school in 1923, which continued until 2010. Education remained part of Kylemore’s work: Notre Dame’s residential Global Centre opened in 2016. The community’s own history records the completion of its new monastery on the estate in 2024. [5] [3]
