Place & story
The Nugent and Palmer house
The Nugents were established at Clonlost from the seventeenth century. Their later house, recorded on the first Ordnance Survey map within a large demesne, was a two-storey building with five bays dating from the late eighteenth century. Captain John J. Nugent owned it outright when Griffith’s Valuation was published in 1854, with the house valued at £40. It passed through his daughter’s marriage to the Palmer family, whose members remained there into the early twentieth century. [2]
A cottage with a windbreak porch
A smaller house in Clonlost, dated by the architectural inventory to around 1800, has a distinctive semicircular windbreak porch. Its small windows include unusual iron pivot casements. The inventory recorded a steep corrugated-iron roof, suggesting an earlier thatched covering, and a substantial buttress supporting one corner. The cottage’s outbuildings stood behind it, away from the road. [3]
