Place & story
A modern cottage honouring an older poet
The Poet’s Cottage is a replica, built as a Millennium Heritage Project by a local FÁS team, rather than the preserved dwelling of Patrick Ryan. It commemorates the poet associated with Camross between 1750 and 1825. A Creative Ireland project in 2024 commissioned Camross artist Peter Dooley to create a portrait of Ryan for the community building, alongside plans to celebrate his work through poetry readings and music. [2]
Mick Dowling and local storytelling
Camross man Mick Dowling helped establish the Poet’s Cottage and founded the Laois Tour Guides. Tributes after his death in 2019 remembered his knowledge of Slieve Bloom history and his skill as a seanchaí, sharing stories with visitors and local people. He also played hurling for Camross, winning six county senior titles. His work brought sport, oral history and the promotion of the surrounding landscape into one local career. [3]
The night Big Tom came
On 28 August 1973, Big Tom and the Mainliners came to Camross for a music festival raising funds for the parish’s new church. Pat Delaney’s account recalls the band arriving in the early evening and describes the booking as a major achievement for a rural parish. The festival’s proceeds made a substantial contribution to the church project, linking the showband circuit with a practical local building campaign. [4]
