Place & story
Founding Crettyard United
Crettyard United AFC was formed on 18 June 1991 at a meeting in the Whiskey Shop in Newtown, Crettyard. The club’s history credits Bill Delaney, Jimmy Dunne and John Behan among those who brought football back to the district after earlier teams had disappeared. The new team won its first competitive match against Levitstown in the Carlow Shield that August. [2]
Building a football club
The club won the Carlow Challenge Cup in 1994 and secured its first Premier League title in the 1998–99 season. It initially used several local grounds before adopting Killeen Sports Field in 1997. Its history records a further landmark in 1999–2000, when the first team won a league, shield and cup treble. [2]
