Place & story
A national league success
In August 2014, Frank Greally reported that St Abban’s women had won Division One at the national track-and-field league finals in Tullamore, while the men finished second in the Premier Division. The club’s Monavea facilities then included an indoor hall, gym, 400-metre track and a floodlit training loop. Its recreational Fit4Life programme also extended into surrounding communities. [2]
School athletics at Monavea
The club hosted its forty-ninth annual Student Games at Monavea on 26 April 2024. Its own report describes pupils competing in sprints, distance races, throwing events and relays, with points combined for groups of schools. Schools from the Carlow group won the competition. The event documents the grounds’ continuing role as a shared sporting venue for schools across the surrounding counties. [3]
