Place & story
A village of trades and services
Bassett’s 1885 directory records Ballycogley’s bootmakers, carpenters, cooper, dressmakers, millers and smiths alongside shops and public services. Francis Prendergast served as both postmaster and emigration agent, linking everyday communications with the practical business of leaving Ireland. These entries give a glimpse of the village’s working life. [2]
The Wadding tower and Barrington house
The architectural inventory records Ballycogly Castle as held by Richard Wadding in 1585. Beside that older stronghold, Nicholas Barrington erected Ballycogly House around 1820. The farmhouse’s raised entrance, Ionic doorcase and diminishing upper windows express a different kind of status from the defensive tower. Associated outbuildings, including a bellcote, form part of the farm complex recorded by the inventory. [3]
Conservation after a collapse
The castle suffered a substantial collapse in February 2024, damaging nearby sheds and leaving rubble around the site. Archaeologist Yvonne Whitty monitored the first phase of conservation repairs commissioned by Wexford County Council with Community Monuments Fund assistance. Her report describes structural work intended to secure the surviving masonry. It documents a particular intervention following the collapse, rather than establishing that all subsequent repairs were completed. [4]
