Place & story

Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s church

Pugin and Ashlin designed the Catholic church in 1863, and building began in 1865. The national architectural inventory records its dedication in 1871 and completion in 1896. Blue-green calp stone contrasts with granite dressings, while a polygonal apse and a tower with an octagonal spire define the exterior. Inside, polished Midleton marble pillars support the nave arcades. The exposed timber roof and memorial windows form further parts of its surviving nineteenth-century character. [2]

Folklore & tradition

The cap above the spire

A local church history by parish priest Patrick C. O’Brien records a story about the completion of the spire. A fourteen-year-old boy called Har Loughlin was said to have climbed the scaffolding and placed his cap on a pole above it, claiming a parish height record. Dean O’Neill supposedly watched from the parochial house and waited until the boy was safely down before intervening. The account presents the episode as local tradition. [3]

Two woods beside the village road

Kilanerin Wood and Curragh Wood stand on opposite sides of a road approaching the village. Coillte maintains looped walking routes through both: the Kilanerin route is three kilometres and the Curragh route three and a half kilometres. The woods contain native trees and habitat for birds and butterflies. Together they give the village a pair of accessible wooded landscapes, with separate entrances and parking areas along the approach. [4]
