People & connections

Four decades behind the counter

Lil Kavanagh ran Strahart’s post office for 41 years before retiring in 2000. Her family acquired the business from the Willoughby family in 1959. Contemporary local reporting describes her work extending to helping customers complete forms and keeping an eye on older neighbours. A fire in 1999 disrupted the office, which was attached to her home; friends and former residents marked her retirement with a gathering in Ferns. [2]

An address in the county archive

The name Strahart also served a wider rural postal district. Wexford County Council’s December 1936 minutes record Seumas Doyle’s address as Ballyrankin, Strahart, Ferns, when accepting his resignation from the Ancient Monuments Local Advisory Committee. The committee’s recorded business included concern about neglected graveyards and a proposal for local parish committees to assist their care. This places a resident of the district within the county’s early organised heritage work. [3]

A botanical record

N. D. Lockhart’s January 1992 revision of Wexford’s Areas of Scientific Interest maps added a Strahart site to the inventory. The entry identifies botanical interest and records Carduus nutans there. It supplies a specific natural-history record for the locality, although the inventory left the site unrated. [4]
