Place & story

Building the church in 1839

Aghamore’s Catholic church was built in 1839 under Father George Gearty. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage cites a parish history recording John Notely’s donation of the site, stone from a quarry at Fearnaught and lime burned beside Gortinty Lake. These details place the building within a local network of materials and support. Its elevated position made the church visible across the surrounding countryside, giving it a prominence beyond the small settlement itself. [2]

Sandstone, pinnacles and stained glass

The church has a four-bay nave, a projecting central entrance and a small sacristy. Cut sandstone, pointed openings and corner pinnacles give its relatively simple plan a Gothic appearance. A bellcote rises above the entrance end, and stone walls and iron gates enclose the graveyard. Stained glass was added during Father Bernard Geraghty’s time in the parish, between 1906 and 1920. The windows therefore belong to a later phase of enrichment within the nineteenth-century building. [2]

Annaduff National School

Annaduff National School stands behind the church in Aghamore and draws pupils from the surrounding rural area. Its own history records the official opening in May 1986, followed by the purchase and development of a playing field in 1992. An extension in 2015 brought further building work, improvements to the field and a new playground. These successive additions continued the village’s educational role alongside the older parish church. [3]
