Place & story

Robert Lloyd’s estate

The University of Galway’s Landed Estates database identifies Annaghmore in Mohill barony as the principal location of Robert Lloyd’s Leitrim property during the 1870s. Lloyd, whose address was at Twickenham in London, held more than eight hundred acres in the county. Part of the estate was offered for sale in the Landed Estates’ Court in January 1877. The record connects local landholding with an owner based overseas and the nineteenth-century court system used to sell estates. [2]

A small rural population

The published 1911 census return lists Annaghmore townland within Cattan electoral division, identifying its parish as Cloone and barony as Mohill. It records seventy-five inhabitants, thirty-five male and forty female. This is a townland total, covering the rural area rather than a separately measured village centre. Its inclusion among the neighbouring townlands places Annaghmore within the dispersed settlement pattern of southern Leitrim and provides a firmer scale for the community than broad parish population figures. [3]

The postal network

The Post Office Guide for April 1900 lists Annaghmore through Dromod in County Leitrim, distinguishing it from the Annaghmore served through Portadown. More than a century later, a parliamentary reply of January 2006 named Annaghmore, Leitrim, among postal agency closures during 2003–05. These records document a local service across widely separated dates, although they do not establish continuous operation throughout the intervening century. [4] [5]
