Place & story
Terence Connolly’s guide to the northwest
Terence Connolly, author of Bundoran and its Neighbourhood, came from Buckode in Kinlough parish. Baptised on 5 March 1864, he was the son of Daniel Connolly and Margaret Clancy. He wrote his 1895 guide while serving as a travelling Catholic curate. Its chapters organised excursions around Bundoran, explaining routes, distances and places of historical or natural interest across the northwest. His stated aim was to cover districts neglected by earlier guide-writers. The book brought a Buckode native’s interest in the surrounding country into print for visitors. [2]
The Duffy eviction of 1882
Daniel Duffy and his daughters were evicted from their Buckode holding by Lord Massey in April 1882. Gerry Fox’s parish history records that neighbours gathered in June and built the family another house nearby in a single day. Resistance continued when a crowd assembled that August to prevent new occupants taking the holding. Margaret and Catherine Duffy each received a month’s imprisonment for intimidation, while a larger group of defendants was sent for trial. The episode drew Buckode into the wider north-Leitrim Land War. [3]
Nearby Lough Melvin
Lough Melvin, east of Buckode, supports an unusual fish community preserved in a natural lake formed after the Ice Age. The National Parks and Wildlife Service identifies three forms of brown trout—ferox, sonaghen and gillaroo—with distinct characteristics and separate spawning grounds. Arctic char and Atlantic salmon also occur there. Streams used by the trout are included in the protected site, alongside wet meadows and woodland. The lake drains through the Drowes to Donegal Bay, linking its freshwater habitats with the Atlantic. [4]
