Place & story
St Columba’s Church
St Columba’s Church of Ireland church was built in 1854. Limestone walls and diagonal buttresses enclose a nave and chancel, with a gabled porch and vestry. Sandstone surrounds distinguish its pointed windows and doorways; three lancets light the eastern end. The architectural inventory singles out the open timber roof and iron entrance gates. Gravestones from the mid-eighteenth century show that burial at the site predates the present building. [2]
From the village school to Gortahose
A schoolhouse appears in Corrawaleen on the first-edition Ordnance Survey map. In 1890 a new school was built just outside the village in Gortachoosh townland. Enda O’Flaherty’s 2016 field record describes its four-bay frontage, slate roof, brick chimney and date plaque. Although disused when he visited, it retained much of its earlier plan and fabric, recording the move from a small village school to a purpose-built rural schoolhouse. [3]
A century and a half of post
The post office opened in May 1862 under J. A. Wood as Drumreilly Post Office. Its name changed to Corrawallen in 1891, and the Hyland family took over in 1910. The business combined postal services with a grocery shop. It closed on 31 January 2014. Local recollections published that February emphasised another service: before household telephones became common, messages received on the post-office line were carried to people across the surrounding district.
