Place & story
The former estate school
Farnaght’s former school, on the Lough Rynn estate, dates from about 1870. Its stone walls, brick window surrounds and decorative timber bargeboards give the small building an elaborate appearance. A projecting porch has a shouldered arch, and the original approach crossed a single-span stone bridge. The building later became a house. [2]
Reassessing an old monument
Work at Farnaght graveyard in 2001 questioned an older interpretation of a nearby ruin. Although marked as an oratory on Ordnance Survey mapping, the structure may instead be a tower-house. Archaeologist Rosanne Meenan reported no evidence that the graveyard was early Christian or medieval. Monitoring a replacement boundary-wall trench revealed nothing of archaeological interest. [3]
