Milling and local services
In 1837 Samuel Lewis counted thirty-three houses and 154 inhabitants in Glasson. Two corn mills operated here, one also used to thicken frieze cloth. Petty sessions met on alternate Wednesdays, a dispensary served the district and a penny post connected the village with Athlone and Ballymahon. Although a patent existed for a market and fair, Lewis said neither was being held. His description therefore records actual local activity rather than assuming that a market charter guaranteed a flourishing market.[2]
An estate worker’s doorway
A surviving terrace house dating to about 1815 belonged to a group built by the Handcock family for workers on the Waterstown estate. Its slate roof, timber sash windows and iron railings retain much of the earlier streetscape. A later stone door surround adds Celtic Revival decoration to fluted pilasters. That combination records two different phases: early nineteenth-century estate housing and a decorative alteration made around the turn of the twentieth century.[3]
The school of 1844
The former schoolhouse is dated 1844 and was funded by the Temple-Handcock family of Waterstown. Its Tudor-style entrance, octagonal brick chimneys and limestone walls distinguish it from the plainer houses nearby. Later conversion gave it a role as a heritage and community centre. The building preserves an identifiable link between estate patronage, village education and subsequent community use.[4]

John McCormack helps raise funds
The architectural inventory records that the school closed between 1897 and 1905 when its patrons could no longer meet the cost. A fundraising concert in 1905 featured the tenor John McCormack of Athlone. This is a specific association with a village institution, rather than a claim that Glassan was his birthplace. The concert connects the school's financial difficulties with a performer whose career soon reached international audiences.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
