Castle and meeting house
Moate Castle began as a sixteenth-century tower house and was enlarged in the eighteenth century. A Quaker family bought it in the mid-seventeenth century and helped establish the market town. Their enterprises included tanning, linen manufacture, brewing, distilling and coachbuilding. A meeting house and walled cemetery developed in the castle grounds in the 1680s and remained in use until 1931. The broad Main Street preserves the scale of the trading settlement that grew around these activities.[2]
An industrial turning point
By 1837, when Lewis described Moate, its manufacturing fortunes had changed. Cotton and linen production, formerly extensive, employed only about a hundred people, and several large breweries and distilleries had ceased operating. Thursday markets and four annual fairs still sustained the town's commercial life. Lewis counted 330 houses, most slated but eighty-six still thatched, and identified Moate Castle as Cuthbert J. Clibborn's residence. His account catches an established market town after the contraction of its larger industries.[3]
Music, artefacts and parkland
Dún na Sí combines a heritage centre with twenty-seven acres of parkland, including a wetland area. Its Comhaltas centre brings together museum artefacts and a céilí house for music and dance. Tuar Ard's theatre and gallery offer another setting for cultural life in the town centre. Together these places give traditional music, local collections and contemporary performance distinct homes in Moate.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
