Place & story
Who would undertake the drainage?
On 14 December 1906, Mr Dolan asked the government to support drainage of the Largydonnell River in Rosclogher. He reported damage to neighbouring farmers’ crops from flooding and described the riverbed as choked with stones. Mr Bryce replied that the Congested Districts Board feared liability for damage farther downstream if it undertook the work itself. The board had instead offered a contribution if a local authority or another legally constituted body carried out the scheme. The exchange records both the farmers’ problem and the administrative obstacle to addressing it. [2]
