Place & story
Vincent Harrison
Fiddler Vincent Harrison was born in Tullycooley in 1927. The Irish Traditional Music Archive names his mother Mary and Drumkeeran fiddler Joe “Lackey” Gallagher among his early musical influences. Harrison emigrated to New York in 1954 and became a close friend of James “Lad” O’Beirne, with whom he recorded duets. Returning to Ireland in 1988, he settled in Clontarf and shared his music with younger players. He died in 2009. [2]
The ringfort on the ridge
Tullycoly townland retains a ringfort on a low drumlin ridge. Michael Moore’s archaeological inventory describes a roughly D-shaped enclosure, about twenty-eight by twenty-four metres overall, bounded by an earthen bank. A field bank cuts across its northern side. The entrance is on the south-south-east; the survey found no clear outer ditch. [3]
The basin stone
About four metres east of the ringfort’s perimeter lies a bullaun stone with a single hollow. The inventory records a basin approximately thirty-five centimetres across and twelve centimetres deep, with damage at one edge. The record supplies no particular saint, ritual or cure associated with this stone. [4]
