Place & story
A village within Limerick’s farming hinterland
Samuel Lewis recorded a constabulary station at Ballyneety, written Ballyneedy in his 1837 account of Cahernarry. The surrounding parish supplied milk daily to Limerick from its meadow and pasture land. Limestone was quarried for agricultural use, and a recently opened road avoided the hill on the route towards Charleville. These details place the village within the everyday economy of the nearby city, linked through produce, road travel and the working of local materials. [2]
Cahernarry Church in Ballyneety
The former Church of Ireland church in Ballyneety dates to 1862. Its Gothic design includes limestone walls, narrow lancet windows and an elaborate open bellcote. Trefoil details crown the roof copings, while carved gate piers and iron railings contribute to the setting. By the architectural survey of 2007 it was being converted to a house. The surviving masonry and decorative features preserve the building’s earlier purpose through that change of use. [3]
A golf course and a community project
Ballyneety’s golf course opened in 1994 to a design by Des Smyth and Declan Branigan. After financial difficulties and closure, local meetings in 2012 helped develop a project to bring it back into use, a process described in the applicant’s submissions recorded by a 2016 planning inspector. The club’s own account now identifies community facilities on the grounds, including meeting space, a walking track and a Men’s Shed. The site’s development therefore extends beyond the playing of golf into shared local activities. [4] [5]
