Place & story

The regional hospital

Limerick Regional Hospital was built on a greenfield site in Dooradoyle during the early 1950s. Architect Patrick J. Sheahan designed the hospital, with construction undertaken by Murphy and Brothers of Cork. It opened in 1955 and later became University Hospital Limerick. The original project included accommodation for nurses as well as patients. [2]

Garryowen’s home

Garryowen Football Club moved from the Market’s Field to Dooradoyle in 1958. More recently, volunteers created the Blue Mile walking route at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, extending the grounds’ role as a neighbourhood resource beyond rugby. [3]

The Crescent

The Crescent Shopping Centre opened in Dooradoyle in 1973. Its later development brought retail, restaurants and a cinema together on the site. [4]
