Place & story
The Church of Ireland ruins
Dromkeen's former Church of Ireland church was built in 1831 with Board of First Fruits support. Its cruciform plan includes an entrance tower that changes from square to octagonal form, crowned by battlements and pinnacles. The National Inventory tentatively attributes the design to James Pain. Medieval church remains stand nearby, recording an earlier phase of worship within the same burial ground. [2]
Saint Bridget’s at Highstreet
Saint Bridget's Catholic church at Highstreet, formerly known as Dromkeen Catholic Church, dates from around 1830. Its T-shaped plan and modest exterior contrast with the elaborate tower of the nearby Anglican building. The National Inventory highlights the surviving timber king-post roof and notes the unusual absence of a rear gallery. The building stands at a road junction, with its original bell separately supported outside. [3]
The February 1921 ambush
On 3 February 1921, the East and Mid Limerick IRA flying columns attacked an RIC convoy at Dromkeen. Eleven policemen were killed. Limerick Museum's historical exhibition describes a joint operation involving about forty-five riflemen under Donnchadh O'Hannigan. The convoy travelled regularly between Fedamore and Pallasgreen; the attackers selected Dromkeen because of a sharp road bend and the cover provided by roadside walls. [4]
