Place & story

Saint Mary Star of the Sea

Saint Mary Star of the Sea dates from about 1858. Its long nave, gabled entrance porch and pointed windows belong to the Gothic Revival, with a rose window marking the western end. Inside, exposed timber roof trusses span the church, and cast-iron columns support a gallery dating from around 1903. The architectural inventory records a comparatively restrained sanctuary. These features show both the nineteenth-century building and a later addition made as the church continued to serve its congregation. [2]

People & connections

Máire na Feadóg’s family business

The Caisleáin Óir Hotel traces its origins to Máire na Feadóg, remembered in the family’s account as a tin-whistle player. Her son Jack McCloskey succeeded her, and his name survives in the hotel bar. Anne and Dom McDevitt bought the property from Jack in January 1978; a later generation developed the hotel in 2002. Its name honours Séamus Ó Grianna’s novel Caisleáin Óir, connecting the business with the Irish-language literary culture of the neighbouring Rosses communities. [3]

Folklore & tradition

An Easter Monday tradition

Annagry’s community notes in February 2016 announced an Easter Monday band parade through the village for the centenary of the Rising. The notice explicitly placed it within an existing parish Easter tradition and invited former band members to return, alongside other local bands. The same notes advertised a céilí and set-dancing classes at Annagry Hall. They preserve a dated record of organised music and dance within the village’s social calendar, rather than evidence that every listed event continues unchanged today. [4]
