Place & story
A compact nineteenth-century settlement
Lewis's 1837 entry records eighty-five houses and 456 inhabitants at Ardara. It places the settlement on the road between Narin and Killybegs, close to river and sheltered water. The ecclesiastical district had been created in 1829 from townlands formerly connected with Killybegs and Inishkeel. Its church, chapel, schools and November fair served a rural district larger than the cluster of houses itself. This modest scale provides a useful starting point for the town's later commercial story.[2]
Cloth made at home and sold at the fair
Ardara’s heritage account describes handwoven tweed, knitwear and embroidery made in homes and small workshops. In 1893 the Congested Districts Board introduced a local improvement scheme, inspecting cloth and identifying goods that met its quality standard. Fair days brought household production into the town’s trading life.[3]
The buildings of the trade
The Mart was provided in 1912 for inspecting, storing and selling tweed. Former weavers’ cottages and other vernacular houses preserve traces of production before large specialised premises became common. The community heritage account also identifies stained glass by Evie Hone in the Holy Family Church.[3]
People & connections
John Doherty and a living musical inheritance
John, or Johnny, Doherty was born in Ardara and spent much time in the town, according to the festival that commemorates him. Concerts, dances and sessions sustain the connection through performance. His musical inheritance adds a distinct cultural strand to the town’s textile history.[4]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
