Place & story
Beattys and Webbs
The architectural inventory traces Spring Park, also called Coolagherty, to a probate reference in 1729 linking Lieutenant Claud Beatty and Captain Charles Beatty with the house. The Beatty family remained associated with the property through the eighteenth century and into the nineteenth. By about 1844 it was recorded as the home of the Webb family. [2]
A house built in layers
The present five-bay house was built or substantially rebuilt around 1760, with two storeys above a basement. Its irregular windows, large end chimneys and altered roofline suggest that older fabric may remain within it. A carved limestone doorway, approached by stone steps, gives the front its principal ornament. Behind the house, a courtyard of limestone outbuildings includes a former stable range; boundary walls and entrance piers preserve further parts of the estate layout. [2]
