Place & story

Aghnaskilloge and the mill

The historical placename record preserved by Longford Library describes Dring as predominantly arable and pasture land crossed by the road from Bunlaghy to Scrabby. It records a corn mill, corn kiln and a village named Aghnaskilloge within the townland, alongside several small forts and plantations. These details provide a picture of the locality before the surrounding estate grounds became commercial woodland. [2]

The Derrycassin estate

Nearby Derrycassin House was built in 1760 for the Dopping Hempenstall family. Its estate retained gardens, a boathouse and stone bridges over the Clooneen River. A community woodland guide identifies Dring's post office building as the former Longford Gate Lodge. The lodge's later use connects village services with the entrance to the earlier estate. [3]

Estate paths beneath the forest

Forestry planting in the 1960s transformed Derrycassin's former grounds. The guide notes that many woodland tracks follow routes which once served the estate's fields, gardens and copses. Remains of the walled garden, cellar and house steps preserve parts of that earlier arrangement. Older planted trees also survived among the later commercial woodland beside Lough Gowna. [3]
