Place & story

The working buildings of Moatfarrell House

An extensive two-storey outbuilding at Moatfarrell House dates to about 1860. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records limestone walls, brick surrounds to the openings and a carved limestone roundel above the central carriage entrance. Together with the house and entrance gates, it illustrates the buildings and resources needed to maintain a substantial nineteenth-century farm. The 2005 survey found it disused and partly derelict. Interpreting local heritage

In 2018 Moatfarrell Community Development unveiled information signs at the motte and the old post office. Aisling Kiernan’s contemporary report records that Connie O’Farrell performed the unveiling during the Farrell International Gathering. LEADER support helped fund the project, with local development bodies and committee members working together to present the area’s historic sites. An interpretive centre was then being considered as a possible future project. [3]
