Place & story
A village in the survey records
The Ordnance Survey place-name account preserved by Longford Library places Carrickboy village in the southeastern part of its townland and records a police barrack. The townland was held by Mr White and comprised roughly 149 acres, including bog and woodland. Samuel Lewis’s 1837 dictionary likewise identifies a constabulary station and locates the hamlet on the road between Edgeworthstown and Ballymahon. Together, these records describe a small settlement connected to the county’s road network and administration. [2] [3]
Richmount Hill
Richmount Hill stands in nearby Screeboge townland. The architectural inventory dates its origins to the early eighteenth century, noting a narrow plan, a central rear return and substantial end chimneys. Stone steps rise to the main doorway above a basement. The entrance gateway has carefully worked stone posts and wheel guards. A reported tradition that the house was once thatched is treated cautiously by the inventory, which considers such a roof unusual for a residence of this scale. [4]
Families at Richmount
The Richardson family occupied Richmount from the middle of the eighteenth century. Auchmuty Richardson served as high sheriff of Longford in 1811. The property later passed through connections with the Moffet family, and Lewis recorded Dr J. Huggins living there in 1837. The architectural survey names the Reverend Arthur Irwin Huggins at the house around the time of Griffith’s Valuation. These associations distinguish Richmount from Richfort, another Richardson property elsewhere near Ardagh. [4] [3]
