Place & story

The community school

Moyne Community School was founded in 1973, carrying forward the traditions of the Latin School and Ballinamuck Vocational School. Its present building opened in 1974. [2]

The older Latin School

The former Latin School at Leggagh, a short distance southwest of Moyne, was built in 1897. Latin and Greek were taught to boys preparing for the priesthood. It became coeducational in 1967 and later served as a community centre. [3]

A heritage centre

Moyne Latin School Heritage Centre opened on 3 May 2024. The council’s project provided a classroom reconstruction with audiovisual interpretation, supported by local schools, Dromard Tidy Towns and the area’s Men’s Shed. [4]
