Place & story

Saint Finian’s church

Saint Finian’s Catholic Church, formerly called Saint Joseph’s, was built in 1826. Its low nave and transepts contrast with a tall stone entrance tower. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage dates the tower to 1843 and the spire to 1877. The interior retains panelled galleries and an unusual porch fanlight. [2]

The old site and the Patrún

The parish places the present church beside an earthen motte and near the ruined church associated with Saint Finian or Fintan. Its October Patrún includes the blessing of graves. The Dictionary of Irish Biography identifies Fintan as Dromin’s early patron, while stressing how little is securely known about his life. [3] [4]
