Place & story

Repairing the road to Dundalk

The Louth Grand Jury query book for the 1832–1834 assizes records a proposed road repair between Philip Breen's house in Edmondstown and Reaghstown crossroads. The entry names J. Wildman and J. Mooney and describes the route as the road from Kingscourt to Dundalk. It specifies twenty perches of repair, a road twenty-one feet wide and a fourteen-foot gravelled width. The house and crossroads served as recognisable endpoints in the county's system of public works. [2]

Households at the turn of the century

The 1901 census report lists Edmondstown townland in Philipstown parish and Clonkeen electoral division. It records 87 people, comprising 49 males and 38 females, in nineteen inhabited houses, with one further house uninhabited. The corresponding population figures were 132 in 1881 and 111 in 1891. These figures describe the townland as a whole and show a decline over those two decades; they do not establish its causes. [3]

St Malachy’s at Reaghstown

The architectural inventory identifies St Malachy's Catholic church in neighbouring Reaghstown as a focal point for Edmondstown. Built around 1830, it was remodelled in 1867 and 1922. The later work includes carved stone finials, a bellcote and pinnacles associated with W. H. Byrne. The interior retains a north gallery and stained glass, including work by Miles Kearney and Son. Decorative iron gates and railings complete the church's roadside setting. [4]
