Place & story
An eighteenth-century foundation
Saint James’s Catholic Church at Grange is dated 1762 in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. It predates Catholic Emancipation and preserves the simple form of an early barn church, although later work substantially changed its plan. The inventory regards local architect and builder Thaddeus Gallagher as its probable designer. [2]
A building altered over time
Extensions in 1818 introduced a square belfry tower and additional space to the west; porches followed in 1852. Further additions and renovation took place in 1994. The tower’s battlements, pale rendered walls and round-headed windows give the building its recognisable character. Inside are timber galleries, while a 2021 architectural account notes shell motifs, associated with Saint James, on their supporting column capitals. [2] [3]
