Place & story

A new design for the Stewart family

The Department for Communities records Killymoon Castle as built in 1802–03 for Colonel James Stewart to John Nash's designs. Nash replaced an earlier scheme by Robert Woodgate. Much of the supervision fell to Stewart's wife while her husband was away; surviving correspondence records her discussing cottage designs with Nash as late as 1805. The project therefore extended beyond the principal house into the buildings and organisation of the demesne. [2]

Sandstone towers and a working estate

The house overlooks the Ballinderry River from its parkland setting. Circular, octagonal and square towers connect lower sandstone blocks, while round arches and battlemented parapets give the composition its castle-like character. The entrance includes unusual ornamental heads made from Coade stone. The departmental survey also records eighteenth-century service buildings, a sawmill and a four-arched stone bridge, evidence that the designed landscape accommodated working infrastructure as well as architectural display. [2]

Golf in the castle grounds

Killymoon Golf Club was established in 1889 and became a founding member of both the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golfing Union. Its own history places the course within the castle grounds. A new clubhouse opened in 1989, with the ceremony performed by Fred Daly, winner of the 1947 Open Championship. The club represents a later use of the demesne's landscape alongside the surviving country house. [3]
