Place & story

From classroom to church

Attimachugh, also locally called Attymachugh, belongs to the civil parish of Killasser. Its church forms part of the Catholic parish of Foxford, whose own history identifies the building as a former primary school. The change of use gave a schoolhouse a continuing place in the religious life of the Ox Mountains community. [2] [3]

People & connections

Michael and Maura Deasy

Before his career in dentistry, Michael Joseph Deasy taught at the one-room school in Attymachugh alongside his elder sister Maura. She taught Senior Infants while he took the older children. Having trained as a teacher at St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, he later changed professions, graduating in dentistry from University College Dublin in 1964. He went on to spend four decades on the faculty of the dental school in New Jersey, retiring in 2011. His obituary preserves the school as an early chapter in that career, rather than claiming Attimachugh as his birthplace. [4]

The church and the mountain loop

The church also serves as the starting and finishing point of the Prebaun Loop. Sport Ireland records a 7.4-kilometre circuit with 150 metres of ascent, managed by Mayo North East LEADER Partnership. This makes the church a meeting point for walkers as well as parishioners, with the route connecting the small settlement to the surrounding mountain landscape. [5]
