Place & story
From manor house to cavalry barracks
Ballinrobe Demesne contains the ruined cavalry barracks beside the Robe. Reconstructed in 1812 to John Behan’s specification, the building reused an older manor house associated with James Cuff. An eighteenth-century plaque recorded earlier rebuilding and enlargement. The barracks burned in 1922; surviving walls and classical fireplaces preserve evidence of its domestic origins as well as its later military role. [2]
Cranmore House and its estate
Cranmore House was begun in 1838 for Alexander Clendenning Lambert and was still under construction in 1842. George Papworth exhibited its design that year. The house looked over the River Robe and formed a group with outbuildings and a small classical gate lodge. Sold in 1957 and dismantled the following year, it survives as a shell, recording another substantial residence within the demesne landscape. [3]
Burnt mounds below the estate grounds
Archaeological work at Cranmore’s grounds in 2016 uncovered estate drains, paths and a driveway, together with much older burnt-mound remains beside the Robe. Further investigation identified two fulachta fiadh, formed from heat-shattered stones, burnt soil and charcoal, and part of a trough. These discoveries show activity beside the river before the country house and its landscaped grounds; the report did not provide a precise date for the mounds. [4]
