Place & story
A century of post-office service
The Hunt family ran Barnycarroll Post Office from 1900 until 2010. John Hunt was followed by his son Walter, then Walter’s wife Bridie after his death in 1950. Mary Hunt took charge in 1977. Reporting its closure, Michael Commins recorded customers’ memories of a thatched office and postal deliveries made first on foot and later by bicycle. The office was also a weekly meeting place. [2]
A shrine moved with the road
A Marian shrine was erected opposite the post office in 1954. The Hunt household operated its timed lighting for many years. When the N17 was realigned, the shrine was transferred to the other side of the road. Commins’s account records a ceremony acknowledging the family’s care, linking the small roadside landmark to the daily work of the office beside it. [2]
Land War conflict in the wider district
Barnacarroll’s chapel was the scene of confrontations between landlord Walter Bourke and his congregation in May 1881. Historian Shane Faherty reconstructs these events from contemporary newspaper reports. Bourke’s arrival armed provoked protests; on the second Sunday, parishioners left the chapel despite Canon Ulick Bourke’s attempt to intervene. The incident brought the district’s landlord–tenant conflict directly into the place of worship. [3]
