Place & story

An old school renewed

From the mid-1970s, Coiste na Seanscoile worked to turn Carrowteige's old school into a community centre. The local co-operative's first newsletter records repairs to the roof, ceiling and floors, the installation of heating and services, and the addition of a kitchen and cultural, training and research space. The building went on to accommodate preschool and after-school services as well as the co-operative's office. [2]

A community co-operative

Comhar Dún Chaocháin Teo was registered on 28 March 1995, with its office in the Seanscoil. Its work joined language and cultural development with practical local services. By the time of its first newsletter in 2005, its activities included childcare, training, heritage publications and signage, and its area of operation had expanded to cover Kilcommon parish. [2]

The Abbey on tour

The Seanscoil also appears in the Abbey Theatre's touring history. On 24 and 25 April 1998 it hosted the national tour of Tom Mac Intyre's Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, directed by Kathy McArdle. The theatre's production archive records Ceathrú Thaidhg among the Irish-language communities visited by that tour. [3]
