Place & story

The thatched chapel of 1832

Creggan's first chapel was built in 1832 on the site later occupied by Saint Patrick's Primary School. The parish describes a small thatched building with a clay floor and no seating. During the destructive weather of 1839, residents received permission to thresh their corn inside it before the crop was lost. The episode records the chapel's practical place in a farming community, as well as its religious purpose. [2]

The twentieth-century church

Work on the replacement chapel began in 1938, and it opened on 24 November 1940. The Church of Saint Oliver Plunkett was refurbished during the 1980s, with Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich celebrating its rededication Mass on 23 March 1986. Stations of the Cross dating from 1940 remained part of the church's furnishings. These dates distinguish the present building from its much simpler nineteenth-century predecessor. [2]

An Creagán’s educational purpose

An Creagán provides an exhibition and educational visits concerned with the archaeology, cultural traditions and environment of Mid-Ulster. Its operating charity, Creggan Education and Research Services, also promotes research into the district's social and economic history. These activities give local heritage a public setting for interpretation, including work with schools. The centre's regional remit reaches beyond Creggan itself, linking the community with the wider upland landscape rather than attributing every nearby monument to the village. [3]
