Place & story
The battle of 1239
The Annals of the Four Masters record a battle at Carnteel in 1239, won by Donnell Mac Loughlin. Among those killed were Donnell Tamnaighe O’Neill, Mac Mahon and leaders of the Kinel Moen. The annal connects the victory with Mac Loughlin’s recovery of the lordship, while noting that he soon lost it again. This brief account places Carnteel within the struggle for authority in medieval Tyrone, although it does not locate the fighting within the present village’s streets or fields. [2]
The old church and burial ground
Carnteel’s medieval church is documented in the ecclesiastical taxation of 1302–06. An archaeological report from Queen’s University Belfast distinguishes that early record from the standing ruin, which it considers no earlier than the sixteenth century. The church was destroyed during the rebellion of 1641, but the burial ground remained in use. After the destruction, parish worship shifted to Aghaloo and later to Aughnacloy. The old cemetery beside Carnteel thus outlasted the building that had originally served it. [3] [4]
A monthly gathering for livestock
In 1837, Samuel Lewis recorded a fair in Carnteel village on the first Wednesday of every month, principally for cattle and horses. His description places the fair within a parish where farming coexisted with domestic linen and cotton weaving. The monthly livestock gathering gave the small settlement a commercial role for the surrounding countryside, bringing buyers and sellers into the village on a regular cycle. [4]
