Place & story

The Boghadoon estate

The University of Galway’s Landed Estates database identifies a Daly estate at Boghadoon, formerly belonging to the Palmer family. Its entry records Thomas Daly as the owner of 1,254 acres in County Mayo in the 1876 survey of landowners. This is evidence of a substantial property associated with Boghadoon, rather than a measurement of the settlement itself. The database treats a connection with the newspaper editor’s family as tentative. [2]

People & connections

James Daly’s birthplace

The Dictionary of Irish Biography places James Daly’s birth at Boghadoon in Addergoole parish in the later 1830s. His father Charles combined farming with hotel keeping and service as a poor law guardian. James subsequently became a farmer and political organiser. In 1876 he and Alfred O’Hea bought and revived the Connaught Telegraph in Castlebar, using the newspaper to campaign over rents and evictions. [3]

An organiser of the land campaign

Daly’s later public career unfolded beyond his birthplace. He was a principal organiser of the Irishtown demonstration in 1879 and chaired the subsequent Westport meeting addressed by Charles Stewart Parnell. The Mayo Land League was established at the Daly family’s Castlebar hotel that August. Daly later criticised the movement’s leadership and its treatment of evicted tenants, while remaining active in local government. He died in Castlebar in 1911. [3]
