Place & story

People & connections

The village’s everyday trades

The 1910 Ulster directory places Cappagh's tradespeople under Pomeroy. Francis Boyle ran a public house and grocery business; Patrick Rafferty combined drapery, grocery trading and postal duties. Other entries name a farmer-publican and a horse dealer. [2]

A hamlet on the Dungannon road

A Bureau of Military History recollection describes Cappagh's whitewashed houses at the top of a brae on the road to Dungannon, near Altmore House. The witness remembered troops arriving in the hamlet, reportedly to protect the nearby waterworks. The account connects the small settlement with infrastructure serving a larger town, while preserving a particular observer's impression of its appearance. It is a retrospective account, not a complete survey of the village. [3]

Folklore & tradition

An older memory of the sweat-house

In his 1901 collection Traces of the Elder Faiths of Ireland, W. G. Wood-Martin records an elderly Cappagh man's recollection of bathing in a local sweat-house. A deep tank beside it provided a cold plunge after the heated chamber. The account explicitly locates the practice near Pomeroy. It preserves a remembered custom of communal bathing, without establishing that the structure survives or giving grounds for assigning it a prehistoric origin. [4]
