Place & story
A kiln beside the road corridor
Roadworks brought an otherwise modest archaeological site at Cabragh into the record. Trial trenches along the upgraded A4 route in June 2006 identified possible features, prompting the stripping of three areas for examination. A corn-drying kiln was the only feature judged archaeologically significant. The excavation report does not assign it a period. It nevertheless records a practical agricultural activity in the locality, providing evidence of grain processing beyond the buildings and roads of the modern settlement. [2]
Three schools brought together
Saint Mary’s Primary School was built in 1968 to accommodate the amalgamation of three smaller schools in Killeeshil parish. Its site on Whites Road became a shared educational centre for the surrounding area between Dungannon and Ballygawley. The school’s own profile describes an assembly hall also used for meals, outdoor teaching space, a walking track and sensory and early-years gardens. Its traditional music group receives tuition in fiddle, banjo, tin whistle and concertina, while the choir participates in parish and community events. [3]
The Cabragh Cup
Saint Mary’s also established a wider sporting connection through the annual Cabragh Cup, held at Kennedy Park in Killeeshil. Tyrone GAA’s account of the June 2016 tournament described it as the thirty-second year and recorded ten participating primary schools, divided into larger- and smaller-school sections. Cabragh won the accompanying shield after recovering from an eight-point half-time deficit against Edendork. The occasion included a presentation to retiring principal Damian Kelly after thirty-six years of service, bringing school and sporting memories together. [4]
