Place & story

A church for outlying parishioners

An Irish Builder report of July 1876 describes William McElwee's design for Saint Mary's Church at Broughderg while work was underway. The purpose was to serve outlying parishioners in a mountain district at modest cost. Its plan combined an open-roofed nave with a smaller eastern chancel and a sacristy to the north. The report records construction by day labour under Father Patrick McGeown. [2]

Our Lady of the Wayside

The replacement church, Our Lady of the Wayside, opened in September 1985 beside the Greencastle–Draperstown road. Architects Hegarty Masterson Doherty of Derry designed it, and J and M Begley of Carrickmore built it. Its interior includes modern window glass and a tapestry behind the sanctuary. The building offers a distinct later chapter in Broughderg's church architecture, a short distance from its predecessor. [3]

Photography across generations

Artist Gwen Stevenson worked with Broughderg Area Development Association on an intergenerational photography project within Community Arts Partnership's This Is Me initiative. Her account describes participants making images for display in the visitor centre. The project used photography and other media to explore identity and address rural isolation, adding residents' own representations of the area to the better-known public interest in its landscape and archaeology.
