Place & story

The earlier house becomes the agent’s home

The building now called the Agent's House preceded the present mansion. Historic Environment Division research links its construction in the 1740s with James Martin through letters discussing his visits and work at Baronscourt. It appears on a 1777 estate map. Correspondence from 1781 records plans to adapt the former house for stabling and farming purposes while retaining its appearance, documenting how an earlier residence was incorporated into a changing estate. [2]

Remaking the mansion

The present Barons Court house was built between 1779 and 1782. The estate's own history records subsequent remodelling by John Soane in 1791 and William and Richard Morrison between 1819 and 1841. Albert Richardson worked there in 1947–49, followed by David Hicks in 1975–76. This succession of interventions helps explain why the house represents several periods of architectural and interior design rather than a single building campaign. [3]

The estate church and its glass

Baronscourt's estate church dates from 1858 and is attributed to the Glasgow architects Clarke and Bell. The Church of Ireland's Gloine survey records a nave and chancel, unusual three-light dormer windows and an elaborate organ case. Its original glazing used stamped quarry windows supplied by James Powell and Sons. The church and lychgate form a separate architectural focus within the wider landscape associated with the estate.
