Place & story

A roadside community

Mid Ulster Council’s 2019 settlement appraisal describes Aughamullan and Derryloughan as a rural community shaped by roadside houses, the primary school and local businesses along Coole Road. Facilities farther east, including a Gaelic club and community centre, served the wider area. The account identifies a dispersed settlement pattern rather than a compact village square. It provides a useful contemporary record of how school, sport and everyday services connected neighbouring rural households. [2]

People & connections

John McAnulty’s local musical life

Singer John McAnulty was born in the Doon, Aughamullen, in 1949. In a personal tribute published in 2019, fellow musician Joey McLernon recalled growing up with him and playing in small groups with McAnulty as lead singer. He remembered a performer who learned songs quickly from the radio and later entertained audiences in local clubs, including Derrytresk. The tribute preserves a musical reputation built through live community performances rather than a recording career. [3]

Pupils preserving industrial memory

In 1997, Primary Seven pupils from Aughamullan school helped restore a memorial at the former Coalisland weaving factory, outside the settlement. It marked five horses owned by the Clark family that had died in 1894. The local heritage account records that the pupils designed the interior of the grave enclosure and that their contribution was acknowledged on a plaque. This modest project linked classroom activity with the preservation of a neighbouring town’s industrial past. [4]
