Place & story
A coastal place in the records
The Placenames Branch records Clogher in an inquisition of 1617 and in subsequent surveys and deeds. The 1834 tithe records distinguish Clogher Devlane and Clogher West. Ordnance Survey namebook remarks from 1838 describe a coast of rocks, shingle and sand. These records place the settlement firmly within Kilmore parish in Erris, on the Mullet Peninsula. [2]
The Famine evictions
The Erris Survey identifies Clogher, Tirraun and Mullaghroe among the villages whose inhabitants lost their homes during the Famine. It records houses being demolished on John Walsh’s estate shortly before Christmas 1847. Catholic and Protestant clergy worked to assist the dispossessed and seek outside support. Clogher’s experience belongs to a wider history of eviction and relief across the southern Mullet. [3]
A rare visitor recorded at Devlane
Clogher also appears in the Irish Rare Bird Committee’s observation records. A juvenile solitary sandpiper was photographed beside Devlane Post Office Road between 1 and 8 October 2021. The committee accepted it as Ireland’s eighth record of the species and the second for Mayo and the Mullet Peninsula, documenting a notable birdwatching event in the locality. [4]
