Place & story

A small thatched house

A roadside cottage in Killurin dates from about 1800 and was recorded by the architectural inventory as County Offaly's smallest thatched house. Its roof uses oaten straw, with decorative work along the ridge. Limewashed stone walls, a half-door and very small windows preserve the character of a modest rural dwelling. The absence of rear windows and the entrance arrangement are features of its traditional plan, making the building valuable for the domestic history it retains. [2]

John Howell’s memories of school

In a published account of growing up in Killurin, John Howell recalled travelling to the local school by pony and trap. Pupils warmed bottles of tea beside the fire and brought bread and jam for lunch. A partition divided the two classrooms, allowing one teacher to supervise everyone when the other was absent. Howell remembered about seventy pupils during his time; younger members of his family later attended Killeigh after the Killurin school closed. [3]

A club shared with Killeigh

Clodiagh Gaels was founded in 2015 when Killurin and Killeigh GAA clubs amalgamated. The club's own account connects the decision with the success of the parish's Na Fianna juvenile teams. Its facilities include a pitch in each village, preserving a physical base in both communities. The merger brought adult football and hurling into a common organisation while drawing on cooperation already established through the younger players. [4]
